Information about medical matters for guest students

If you fall ill during your stay here in Stockholm, you can phone to the nearest medical centre (usually called the Husläkarmottagningen or vårdcentralen). They are usually closed on weekdays after 5 pm and during the weekends, but you can get help at their Emergency Room (usually called the Närakuten).

For problems such as a bad earache or severe throat infections such as tonsillitis, or if you need to have a urine sample analysed, you should turn to your medical centre, but for medical information and advice, you can dial 08 - 320 100 (the medical advisory service), where you can speak with a nurse 24 hours a day.

The Emergency Wards at large hospitals in Stockholm only take serious cases such as urgent heart problems, breathing problems and acute stomach pains. If you are in very bad condition, have someone dial the emergency number 112 for an ambulance.

For dental problems dial this toll-free number 020 - 687 55 00 for advice. There are dentists on emergency duty at St. Erik´s Hospital (located at Polhemsgatan 48). Call 08 - 545 512 20. They are open between 8 am and 9 pm.

Don't forget to bring your European health insurance card if you come from an EU or EES country, since it entitles you to the standard Swedish fee. Contact the General Health Insurance Authorithy (Försäkringskassan) if you have inquiries.

The Stockholm Student Health Unit can tell you the best way of handling your troubles or your illness.
